Last month, I took the plunge and decided to go out and get myself a bike hauler. A motorcycle site needs to move motorcycles around right? Now I need your help to make it awesome.
Weird time to buy a new truck, right? I know. Trust me. I KNOW. I asked. Jalopnik said everything was good and they were stoked with the site and to go for it. I went forward. It is what it is and I can’t undo it. Let’s move on.
EDIT: Yes, I know the answer is van. But, I couldn’t afford two vehicles and I wanted something I also liked being inside (because we sit in our cars a lot in Southern California) and a nice ProMaster or Sprinter build would have been twice as much and a pain to drive around L.A. Maybe I’ll get one and then a car when I get better at making money at this whole thing but, until then, it’s gotta be a truck.
So, I have this beautiful new thing. As any of you who’ve been following me on social media for a while know, it was a tough decision between the Toyota Tacoma and the new Chevy Colorado. But, in the end, the styling and reliability of the Taco won (ok, and I’ve wanted one since I was 15).
They finally gave it a six speed and updated the interior so it looked worthy of its price tag and I was sold the moment I sat in one. It didn’t matter how many times I tried to convince myself that the cheaper, better handling and far more economic diesel Colorado was a better option - it was always going to be the Taco.
So, last month, I bought a new 2016 Toyota Tacoma. It’s the two wheel drive V6 model with an automatic transmission and the TRD Sport package. It’s got the quad cab and, more importantly, the long bed (because motorcycles!).
Here’s where you guys come in, because this is where I really need your expertise. No motorcyclist wants to keep any vehicle they own stock, whether it has two wheels or four. Also, moving motorcycles around or taking bikes to the track is serious business.
For you Toyota people, what do I need to know about owning a Tacoma? What do I need to do to it? Are their any common mods that everyone should do? Since I want to use it for bikes, I don’t really want to turn it into too much of a bro-dozer - so no huge lifts.
Motorcycle people, have a ramp you love? Or a trailer? What about an in-bed bike securing system? Let’s dive in so I can both outfit the Taco and we can make a comprehensive list of products for anyone looking to do the same.
Lastly, lanesplitting in this thing sucks.
